For the past two weeks we have been busy rehearsing for the next concert Love is... We have two guest choreographers, Cynthia Pratt and Nick Owens, so the rehearsal slots have to be shared equally between them and myself. I am contributing a revival of Love Songs and the Indiana premiere of a male-male duet called For Jose which I created in 2001 in memory of my dear friend Jose Aznarez who had passed away the preceding Fall due to complications from Aids.
For this rehearsal period we are minus Brittany Edwards who recently underwent surgery and in now in recovery, and Zach Young who is recovering from a foot injury. It is always wonderful for the dancers when someone new comes in to work with them, and they are excited to be working with the guest choreographers. It is also very revealing for me to observe them in choreography created by someone else. I always see things in them that I hadn't previously perceived. As usual at the start of any rehearsal period, most of the time is spent in learning steps. Cynthia is re-staging Love Letter, a piece of hers from 2001, and Nick is doing a brand new work called Love Key, loosely inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We have also started doing our school shows again. David |
